SMAC is an open-source, physics based, accident reconstruction algorithm program, initially
developed by Calspan Corporation, a Crash Data Research Center, for the USA sponsored NHTSA
(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). SMAC analyzes the longitude and lateral
movements of vehicles as well as the rotational motion about the vertical axis of vehicles on a
horizontal plane. If a contact between vehicles is detected, the collision phase is analyzed. The
external forces applied predicts the crush profiles relative to the speed of the vehicles.
